Kurt Loeffler began performing drum set as a teen and eventually migrated to studying the entire percussion family of instruments while still in high school. His principal teacher was Bruce Pulk, now the timpanist with the Phoenix Symphony. He then attended the University of Michigan's School of Music where he studied classical orchestral percussion with Michael Udow, and jazz vibraphone and marimba with Ted Piltzecker. After graduating from Michigan, he furthered his jazz studies at DePaul University and studied jazz piano, keyboard harmony and theory with master jazz educator and publisher Alan Swain. He has continued his education throughout the years and in 2010 completed his Master's certification in Arranging through the Berklee School of Music. In 2018, he completed his Masters degree at the University of Illinois School of Music in jazz drum set with Joel Spencer and Larry Gray.
